While a classic-enough vengeance plot in theory, a trailer for the film that dropped this month has viewers questioning who decided that, after a year of violence against the Asian community, a movie about a white woman going on a murder spree against the Japanese mob was possibly a good idea. In the process, she befriends the daughter of a former target and gets advice from co-star Woody Harrelson’s character. Netflix’s upcoming Tokyo-set action flick “Kate” tells the story of an assassin - played by “Birds of Prey” star Mary Elizabeth Winstead - who, after being poisoned on the job while attempting to kill a member of the yakuza, decides to spend her final 24 hours taking revenge against the Japanese crime syndicate. The movie’s not even out, but some reviews are already in, and commentators want to know: Who greenlighted this? Joe Exotic’s doctors suspect he has bladder cancer - but he’s refusing treatment: report Producer accused of trying to halt release of Netflix movie ‘The White Tiger’ Tom Brady, Netflix talking ‘Greatest Roast of All Time’ comedy special Instead, Kate's tone is more John Wick than Nobody, something not all of its critics enjoyed.Chris Rock slaps back at Will Smith with these vicious jabs on Netflix special That is not to say that Kate takes itself too seriously, but that the Mary Elizabeth Winstead vehicle is not as campy about its humor as some of its competitors. Kate’s issues with reviewers could stem from the fact that, unlike the more tongue-in-cheek Gunpowder Milkshake, the action-thriller remains relatively straight-faced throughout its increasingly ludicrous story. But there's a visual wit and visceral energy to it that other recent efforts struggle to find.” ” Subtle it's not: Kate is red-meat storytelling, all broad outlines and crunched bones. “ A serviceable Friday night choice that gets the job done just fine, enough to turn it into a hit for the streamer, but not quite enough to insist that anyone actually bothers to make time for it." " Kate has some decently fun action, despite certain trite directorial choices, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead serving as the movie's main bright spot." The film really wants us to care about the title character, but fails to make us do so.” “ The film could be forgiven for its tedious and predictable plot if it had some exhilarating action, but unfortunately, the fight scenes are rushed and leave Kate looking more like the Terminator than an actual human being whose body is gradually shutting down… Unfortunately, the story falls flat with tiresome tropes and faltering action scenes. Even the title character feels like an extension of star Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s other vengeful assassin character from Birds of Prey." (It is actually directed by a human, Cedric Nicolas-Troyan.) It’s a little bit Extraction, a little bit Gunpowder Milkshake. " You’ve seen Kate before in other movies, which a cynic might suspect is exactly the idea: It feels like a title cooked up by the Netflix algorithm solely for the purpose of populating a Because You Watched row. And it’s somewhat obvious to Nicolas-Troyan that the audience doesn’t really care.” “ The body count becomes numbing… The film tries to make the audience care about Kate’s possible redemption… it’s beyond obvious where this is going, that all this talk of family will sour into betrayal and eventually, a climax that postures as an emotional revelation. So what do the negative reviews for Kate say? Instead, reviewers have noted that earlier action thrillers like Charlize Theron-starring Atomic Blonde featured strikingly similar heroines, while the recent Gunpowder Milkshake even saw star Karen Gillan playing not only an assassin going up against former employers but one who befriended a young girl to humanize her killer character (as Kate does in this Netflix effort). However, this conceit is not the element that many critics have singled out as being unoriginal in the case of Kate. It is hard to deny that the plot of Kate is more than a bit derivative, with the premise of an antihero being given a brief window for vengeance before their death already being exploited by 2006’s wildly underrated Jason Statham cult oddity Crank. The largest impact is from the length of time mixing. So, although adding the sugar slowly is best practice, being so extreme about it doesn’t actually make a huge difference. After such careful adding, I was sure I was going to be greeted with an ultra smooth, grit free meringue. To test the theory of ‘add the sugar SLOWLY’, I added a tablespoon of sugar to whisk egg whites every 45 seconds until it was done. But the larger the pavlova, the more challenging it is to mix in a home KitchenAid. For a small pavlova, mixing until smooth is relatively straight forward. And I have checked - it does actually matter if your sugar is all dissolved. Sugar particles are hygroscopic and unattached molecules invite in water from the surrounding environment. When making a meringue, you really want to make sure the sugar is totally dissolved. Next, it has a crisp crust with a fully marshmallow insideĪfter that, it’s a crusty edge with a soft/chewy inside.Īfter that it’s the danger zone aka stick-to-your-teeth type textureįinally, we reach fully baked and crisp all the way through It starts as a completely soft raw meringue but quickly becomes marshmallowy all over with a soft-to-the-touch crust. When you bake your pavlova, it is going through a few stages as the heat slowly penetrates into the centre of the meringue. The other way to achieve a chewy meringue is through the bake time. Basically, the more ‘free water’ there is in the base recipe, the chewier the meringue is. I found that as you reduce the sugar or increase the brown sugar (it has more moisture), the final result is a chewier, with a more fragile, shattery crust. Sugar makes the pavlova mixture strong and stable, and is responsible for that super hard shiny crust. But I know there are people who like it a bit more toothsome (it was 50/50 on my Instagram poll!) so let’s discuss how to adapt it. The mallowy pavlova is the classic pav - a crisp exterior with a fluffy middle. Today’s newsletter is a Q&A format… let’s do it! The $78 million, 218,000-square-foot facility is a transformational jewel for the campus of 43,000 students (60,000 global) and a catalyst for revitalization in the city's central business district. The building incorporates regional materials and includes native landscaping. Also featured in the space are Kids Foot Locker (with a Fly Zone shop-in-shop) and the company’s new women’s-focused retail initiative, Six:02 (with a special The Collection at Six:02 section). The new College Park Center, opened February 1, 2012, represents a dream come true for a generation of alumni, faculty, staff and community members. Upon completion of the Landlord’s work, we verified the floor openings with the drawings, which were a match. Once all of the various moving parts and pieces were developed and designed, we provided the Landlord with accurate information to bid out. We also developed and designed the wall partitions, which occurred at the new floor openings. We hired a consultant to scan each floor in order to obtain the exact height at the bottom and top of escalators. Due to many inconsistencies in the existing concrete slab, the floor to floor heights varied greatly throughout the space. When installing an escalator, there is only an allowance of a ¼” tolerance to make adjustments in the field. In order to provide the necessary dimensions and locations for the openings, we had to coordinate with the escalator and elevator vendors for the requirements of the equipment and get the new steel sizes from the structural engineer to support the vertical transportation. We had to determine the locations for the openings at the beginning of the project, despite many factors at play. We hired the Landlord’s structural engineer to model the building’s structure and design for new steel in order to ensure stability. Due to the large areas of floors, columns and girders being proposed to be removed, it was determined that this much removal would leave the structural integrity of the building at risks, so it needed to be evaluated and modeled by an engineer. The Landlord was creating the openings in the slab for the LED screen, escalators, elevator and floor layout, based on our drawings. We came up with these solutions to avoid sacrificing the design, airflow and the conditioning of the shop. Overcoming these challenges: We worked closely with our Mechanical Engineers to design ductwork that could be hidden within a ceiling element or we provided flat and wide ducts, to circumvent lowering the lighting. There were also structural concerns regarding the removal of large sections of floor slabs, columns and girders. Project Completion: Febru(grand opening date)Ĭhallenges of this project: There were very low floor to floor heights in this space.
